When you shop with a Saturday Academy widget, you are supporting the intellectual aspirations of over 6,000 young people who participate in Saturday Academy's programs each year. Thank you for helping these students follow their curiosity.—Beth Katona, Development Director
Saturday Academy gives 2nd-12th grade kids learning experiences that get them excited about school, help them explore potential careers, discover their intellectual possibilities, and teach them to be lifelong learners. We exist because so many young people are uninspired by learning skills without context, taught to take tests not to make discoveries, and cannot envision a future as creators and do-ers because of sizeable time spent on passive activities like tv and video games
Our classes and internships happen outside of the regular school day and connect young people to cutting-edge concepts and let them touch and use equipment to ignite their desire to learn both in and out of school. We give kids a way to discover for themselves the answers to the questions on their minds like:
- How does medicine make you better?
- What would it be like to visit another planet?
- Could I make a robot to do my homework?
- Why do some cats have stripes and others patches or spots?
Saturday Academy connects kids directly with the experts who know things like how to grow a carbon nanotube, how to program in a complex computer language, how to explain string theory, how to write a novel, and how to create glass sculptures.
Saturday Academy also provides young people a way to explore the answers to the things they are wondering about the future:
- How can I know what job I would like to do when I grow up?
- What exactly is an engineer (or nuclear physicist or astronomer) and could I really be one too?
- Could I solve the problems I see in the world…pollution, illnesses, hunger…when I grow up?
For 26 years Saturday Academy's programs have been inspiring young people and changing lives. We reach out to students of all types with generous tuition assistance, holding classes in over 50 locations throughout the community, and special relationships with other social service organizations. Over 140,000 students have followed their curiosity in Saturday Academy's programs and today these young people are grown and are helping to discover cures for cancer, inventing new biomedical devices, animating feature films, designing green buildings, and founding companies. Many of them say that their experiences with Saturday Academy put them on their path to change the world.
