How We Began:
Founder Frank Lockyear was a passionate local nurseryman planting trees in the aftermath of the 1930's Tillamook, Oregon burns. After retiring, he formed ReTree over 30 years ago and dedicated his life to reforestation, planting trees with children and adult volunteers around the world. ReTree has organized tree plantings in over 50 countries around the world including Tanzania, Mexico, Poland, Finland, Haiti, Thailand , Greece and others. We are proud to say over 6 million trees have been planted by ReTree with the help of service organizations, volunteers (youth and adult) and other partners. We thank all those who support ReTree and value the importance of planting more trees for future generations.
Making a Difference Planting Trees
We plant trees on idle lands and urban landscapes in an effort to improve our environment. In addition, we involve youth in our tree planting projects providing them an environmental education experience. Projects have included living tree memorials, annual school service learning projects, National and state park improvements and more. Partnering with schools and service organizations like Boy Scouts of America and Lions Clubs International we connect with youth members and encourage them to participate in tree planting projects. Using member expertise in forestry, landscape architecture and other specialties, we educate participants both youth and adults on how, when and what kind of native tree species to plant. We supply tree planting guides to help further educate participants. With vast industry connections we can provide resources to help locate seedlings at reduced rates, or find tree planting sites and locate young people who are anxious to learn about trees and plant them to improve the world we work, live and play in. Youth and service organizations are encouraged to return to a site to observe survival rates and general health of the living forest. In some cases the trees are tagged with a childs name and date so in later years they can locate the trees they planted and witness their growth and Mother Nature's awe-inspiring work.
Vision: Growing ReTree International into the Future to Ensure Trees for Tomorrow
We continue to grow as a premier environmentally conscious non-profit organization. With youth-based participation and a strong educational focus, we will strive to create a reputation for stellar environmental stewardship, preeminent tree planting projects, innovative sustainability practices, and widespread enhancement of rural and urban habitats benefitting future generations. Through group, community and youth partnerships, we will work together to plant trees, restore ecosystems, and improve economies, communities and cultures. We are committed to providing education and raising awareness to new levels regarding the benefits of reforestation and tree planting projects.
