Welcome to our CafeGive page! We are excited to share information about our New Animal Community Center. We hope you will be inspired to build some widgets, and inspire your friends and family to shop to help us raise funds to continue providing lost, neglected and abandoned animals with quality, compassionate care, which is the heart of what we do.
—Christine Benninger, President
Humane Society Silicon Valley (HSSV)
In April 2009, HSSV made history when we opened the Nation's first environmentally certified "green" Animal Community Center that offers a full spectrum of pet and community services under one roof, including an Adoption Galleria for cats, dogs, and rabbits; Education Programs; a Medical Center offering spay/neuter and vaccination services; a pet store; a dog park; and doggie daycare, boarding, training, and grooming. By offering a variety of services and education programs that support families with pets, we plan to create a new paradigm for animal welfare organizations that will help break the cycle of pet abandonment and neglect. We believe our Animal Community Center is an inspiring model of humane care, community involvement and green building design for shelters and nonprofits nationwide.
Our animal habitats simulate home environments, enabling real-world training opportunities as well as greatly reducing animal stress and behavioral issues created by traditional shelters that house animals in cages and kennels. Our Animal Community Center is able to accommodate up to 10,000 animal adoptions a year.
In addition, the facility is a "green" structure that meets Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards set by the national Green Building Council. HSSV expects to be the first Gold level LEED certified animal facility in the Nation! Key "green" components include photovoltaic arrays to generate 40% of the center's power needs, a highly efficient cleansing system for kennel maintenance, synthetic turf in the community dog park, a cool (reflective) roof to reduce the roof surface temperature, and heat recovery technology on all heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems.
