Friends of Youth
Teens in our community are dealing with issues such as stress, depression, substance abuse, and even violence in the home. But, you might not be able to tell that they are struggling. At a time in their lives when they desperately want to fit in, no kid wants to stand out because they have problems. Others hide what they are going through because they think that no one else will understand.
At Friends of Youth, we understand. For 60 years we've been here to help young people develop positive life skills, discover their passions and overcome problems that may stand in their way. From substance abuse counseling to shelter for street-involved youth, Friends of Youth is a safe place for youth. Our services are concentrated in four areas:
- Residential Services: intensive residential treatment for boys and therapeutic foster care for boys and girls.
- Homeless Services: outreach and housing for homeless young adults, including pregnant or parenting young mothers.
- Youth and Family Services: counseling, parenting classes and substance abuse treatment and prevention.
- Healthy Start: education and mentoring for young, first-time mothers.
You have a unique opportunity to join the Friends of Youth community and help thousands of teens and young adults overcome challenging circumstances each year; young men like John who came to Friends of Youth's Outreach office to get help and find a place to live after he was released from jail. He said that his "couch surfing" at friend's houses contributed to his troubles in the first place.
His parole officer referred John to Friends of Youth and John knew the key to success was to have a place to live and a job. This Parole Officer was a key community member who shared the Friends of Youth message.
Friends of Youth was founded on the belief that every young person has the potential to succeed. For 60 years now, we have been helping young people-like John-get their lives back on track.
Our founders were driven by their belief that taking care of young people is a community's shared responsibility.
Our Outreach Staff worked with John to set his own goals and helped him apply at New Ground Everett-our transitional living program. Outreach staff was able to provide John with toiletries, socks, and a coat, thanks to donations. Here are two more examples-staff and donors- of our community taking a role in helping this one young man.
John is a perfect example of how an independent and hardworking young man can take the initiative to turn his life around with help from those around him. Thank you for helping John and thousands of more like him.
