Spotlight: Hands on Nashville
Since 1991, Hands on Nashville (HON) and its volunteers have played an important role in Nashville's emergency planning efforts.
HON was one of the first organizations to receive a phone call when flood-inducing storms devastated Nashville in early May. Thirteen inches of rain fell on the city in two days, 25% of the amount that Nashville usually gets in one year. The Cumberland River crested at over 50 feet, flooding downtown Nashville. The city’s disaster plan was enacted immediately.
Since early May, HON has placed more than 18,000 volunteers in recovery roles. They have sorted food at the Second Harvest Food Bank, assisted the Red Cross and distributed clean water to flood victims. I have never visited Nashville and, like many people across America, was looking for some small way that I could help with Nashville’s recovery efforts. By shopping at my favorite online stores through CafeGive, I am able to earn funds for HON on a regular basis. The small percentage that is earned from each of my purchases may not seem like a lot, but combined with the 100 or 1000 purchases made by others, I know these funds will make a difference to the community of Nashville.
